In 1989 is de Dutch Classic Yacht Regatta voor het eerst georganiseerd als een voor het publiek aantrekkelijk evenement rondom internationale wedstrijden van klassieke jachten. De eerste bijeenkomst bestond uit twee dagen wedstrijdvaren op het Haringvliet voor klassieke schepen, voornamelijk leden van de Vereniging Klassieke Scherpe Jachten (VKSJ), samen met enkele Engelse en Belgische klassiekers.
Het initiatief voor dit evenement kwam vanuit het bestuur van de VKSJ en de organisatie was in handen van enkele leden van deze vereniging. Al snel werd de Dutch Classic Yacht Regatta in omvang, financiën en organisatie zo groot dat het noodzakelijk werd hiervoor een eigen stichting op te richten. Daartoe zijn in februari 1993 de statuten van deze Stichting vastgesteld onder het voorzitterschap van dhr. Anton Zeeberg. De Stichting onderhoud nog steeds een goed contact en werkt samen met de VKSJ.

DCYR foundation
The first Dutch Classic Yacht Regatta was held in 1989 on the protected waters of the Haringvliet near the old naval town of Hellevoetsluis approximately 10 nm south of Hook of Holland. The majority of the participants were members of the Dutch Association of Classic Sharp Yachts (VKSJ) though some of the participants came from Belgium and the UK. The regatta program lasted two days.
The first ideas on the DCYR were launched at a VKSJ-meeting and a small group of members from this association was appointed to organise the event. Soon the Dutch Classic Yacht Regatta grew in number of participants, finances and organisation and it became necessary to establish an independent foundation. Thus the regulations of the DCYR foundation laid down in February 1993 by the first chairman Mr. Anton Zeeberg. The foundation still cooperates with the VKSJ.
